DOE Awards Funding to Dresser Waukesha

WAUKESHA, WISCONSIN (October 31, 2008) - Dresser Waukesha was awarded approximately $2 million as the latest installment of a multi-million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for a continuing technology development effort that will improve engine efficiency and further reduce emissions levels.

This award is the continuation of the successful Dresser Waukesha DOE partnership that began in 2001 as part of the DOE's Advanced Reciprocating Engine Systems (ARES) program. In the first phase of the ARES program, Waukesha developed the APG1000 (Advanced Power Generation), one of the world's highest efficiency 1800 rpm engines.

The APG1000 is designed for the world power generation market. It is a turbocharged, lean-burn unit with 42 percent engine efficiency at 1800 rpm, 0.5 g/bhp-hr NOx (with after-treatment), that delivers a 10 percent reduction in cost of electricity produced, and reliability and durability equivalent to, or better than, other current high-speed engines.

The ARES program was created to encourage the development of large natural gas engines that operate with increased efficiency while meeting tight emissions requirements, maintaining current levels of reliability and durability and reducing ownership costs.
